Ethics in Research and Professional Practice

Guidelines for the Responsible Conduct of Research: Ethics and the Publication Process.

ASHA Code of Ethics sets forth the fundamental principles and rules considered essential to preserving the highest standards of integrity (revised January 1, 2003).

The 2008 International Compilation of Human Subject Protections lists about 900 laws, regulations, and guidelines from 84 countries on human subject protections, including four new countries: Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, and Turkey.

Evidence-Based Practice

Evidence-based practice offers clinicians the opportunity to support their treatment plans with scientific evidence. The evidence-based practice approach assures administrators, payers, and consumers of highest-quality care.

Compendium of Clinical Practice Guidelines and Systematic Reviews
ASHA's National Center for Evidence-Based Practice in Communication Disorders (N-CEP) offers this compendium of clinical practice guidelines from around the world related to audiology and/or speech-language pathology. Only those guidelines with an overall rating of "Highly Recommended" or "Recommended with Provisos" based on the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE) Framework are included in this compendium. In 2006, N-CEP expanded the compendium to include evidence-based systematic reviews. Unlike practice guidelines, however, there is no single widely accepted set of standards for what constitutes a well-done systematic review. This part of the compendium therefore contains all of the reviews that are identified. Staff have included with each listed review five commonly used quality indicators, so members can, at a glance, decide whether they are comfortable with the quality of the review. New reviews are added weekly, but the list is far from comprehensive at this point.
