ASHA's Annual Conference on Research in Communication Sciences and Disorders

Lessons-for-Success: Developing the Emerging Scientist

The aim of this conference is to provide intensive training to a select group of emerging scientists in the areas of (a) grant preparation and funding, (b) development and management of competitive research programs, and (c) advancement of professional competencies.

This conference is targeted to:

  • Individuals who have already shown promise for a productive research career—(i.e., achieved early success in obtaining external research funding, publishing research data, and other measures of research-career success);
  • PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty who have had recent success in obtaining awards (e.g., ASHFoundation research grant; or National Institutes of Health [NIH] small research grant, research fellowship, or career-development award).

Individuals who have applied for, but have not received, external funding are eligible to apply for the conference, although priority for selection of conference fellows is given to those who have obtained external funding.

Note: Individuals who have already been awarded a R01 from the NIH and/or obtained tenure are considered too advanced for the purposes of this conference.

Conference Structure

Attendance is by invitation-only and is limited to 25–30 participants. The event is planned and coordinated by the Research and Scientific Affairs Committee, the Lessons for Success Planning Committee, and ASHA's Scientific Programs and Research Development Unit. It is co-sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) of the National Institutes of Health and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (ASHF).
