The Grant Review and Reviewer Training program aims to provide specific instruction to junior faculty members on how to review research grants, with a special emphasis on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) review process.
Attendance for the conference is by invitation only and is limited to approximately 25 participants. No registration fee is required.
Because informal question and answer sessions will be conducted during each review/debriefing period, no separate form or test will be given to attendees.
Learning Outcomes
After attending this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe the key components of written grant application reviews
- Summarize orally the key points of the written review for the review panel
- List five review challenges and strategies for addressing these challenges
- Summarize in writing the review panel discussion and make adjustments to the summary based on review panel feedback
Conference Structure
The workshop will feature panel discussions about effective strategies for developing grant proposals and for understanding the grant review process. The primary audience will be individuals who are interested in obtaining funding for research in communication sciences and disorders. This would include doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior level faculty.
During the second day of the conference, a group of experts will review and provide feedback in small group discussions about actual grant proposals submitted by attendees. Individuals are invited to submit proposals (e.g., NIH: R01, R03, K08, K23, R32; NSF) in draft or final form for discussion and suggestions, although preference will be given to completed proposals. Proposal topics can include research related to speech, language, or hearing. If a proposal has been reviewed previously, review comments may be appended.
Up to twelve proposals will be selected for review during the workshop. Attendees, however, are not required to submit a proposal in order to participate in the workshop discussions.
