Phonology Assessment/Intervention

Division 1, Language Learning and Education sponsored a 2-hour live Web Event on trends in Phonology Assessment/Intervention (archived content) October 13.

Starfish Mini-Grant

Divsion 1 sponsors a grant, not to exceed $3,500, for a research study on evidence-based practice in language intervention with children or youth.

A submission must be made jointly by an academic and a clinical practioner, one of whom must be an affiliate of Division 1. Details are available on the affiliates-only Web pages. The submission deadline is January 29, 2010.

Division 1 Offers PreConvention Workshop

The day before the ASHA Convention begins, Wednesday, November 18, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Division 1 offers a Clinical Workshop on Parent Programs That Work! The Efficacy of Parent Training for Preschoolers With Language Disorders. View the agenda [PDF] and registration form [PDF].

Perspectives on Language Learning and Education

Perspectives on Language Learning and Education is now available online only, published by ASHA with HighWire Press. Perspectives is published 3 times annually in March, July, and October. Division 1 is a CE Provider and offers its issues for self-study to earn CEUs.

Archived Web Events 

Divisions sponsor live, 2-hour Web Events in the ASHA Discussion Forums area of the Web site. These events feature topic experts who answer questions from the audience. All ASHA and NSSLHA members may attend.

Mission Statement

It is the mission of the Division on Language Learning and Education to support children and adults with developmental language disorders and their families by:

  • providing clinicians and researchers with resources and education related to language development and disorders;
  • promoting excellence in evidence-based clinical practice with children and adults with developmental language disorders and their families;
  • promoting the development and dissemination of basic and applied research in language development and disorders;
  • advocating for professionals specializing in child language clinical practice and research.

  • Cultural/linguistic diversity in language learning and effects on literacy learning
  • Research strategies for studying children with language or phonological disorders who also speak English as a second language or a vernacular dialect of English

  • Research strategies for studying the efficacy of educational/intervention processes

Continuing Education

Division 1 is a continuing education provider for events, such as institutes and workshops, and self-study of the newsletter. The division sponsors a Short Course, seminar, and other presentations at the annual ASHA Convention.

  • CEUs for self-study of Perspectives: The division publication contains continuing education articles. Only Division 1 affiliates may earn ASHA continuing education credit by completing self-study questions related to those articles.
  • Short Course: Division affiliates are eligible for a 50% discount on a Short Course at ASHA Convention.

E-mail List

Division 1 offers affiliates the opportunity to join an exclusive (for Division 1 affiliates only) E-mail List.

Networking

Affiliates have the opportunity to identify others with interest in language learning and education by means of affiliate membership meetings, e-mail list participation, and an exclusive affiliates-only Web forum.

Representation Within ASHA

  • The Division 1 Coordinator represents the Language Learning and Education Special Interest Division within the ASHA Board of Division Coordinators.
  • The Steering Committee responds to ASHA requests for input regarding policy, guidelines, committees, and other issues.
  • Affiliates have the opportunity to provide input to the division leadership and ASHA.
