Advances in Research: Identification and Treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Young Children

Recent research supports the feasibility and effectiveness of early identification and intervention efforts with young children with autism spectrum disorders. This advanced-level presentation will provide direction for speech-language pathologists working with this population, and offer strategies to support families and improve long-term outcomes. Directions for future research and clinical implications for assessment and treatment will be discussed.
Learner Outcomes
The symposium will be worth .5 ASHA CEUs and after taking this course, participants will be able to:
- Use current research to enhance their knowledge of the nature of autism spectrum disorders as manifested in young children.
- Draw on the research literature to more accurately identify infants and toddlers with autism spectrum disorders.
- Develop effective, evidence-based intervention plans which incorporate family preferences, cultural differences, and learning styles.
